In April, Designers by the Bay, a wholesale jewelry design show, was held at Shreve & Co. with more than 100 jewelry professionals turning out to celebrate its eighth year. Considered by the San Francisco membership to be the chapter’s premiere event, Designers by the Bay annually showcases the work of new and established talent in the Bay area. The show promotes the participation of women with all levels of training and experience in jewelry design. This year, 26 designers showed their work, with styles ranging from clean and modern to baroque and sumptuous.
A design competition is held during the show, with attendees voting for their favorite designers on the basis of creativity, originality, and craftsmanship. This year, first place went to Marie Scarpa of Marie Scarpa Designs for her intricately woven precious metal “tapestries.” Second place went to Clare Ullman of Clare Ullman Designs, whose line of fine jewelry incorporates unique gemstones and emphasizes high-karat gold. Third place went to Kimarie Klahn of Kimarie Designs for her unusual handmade findings in 18k and 22k gold.
