According to the caption to this 1975 Vogue photo of model Lauren Hutton, “When you use your hair as a frame, you’ve got to make sure it’s framing something pretty terrific.” They meant Hutton’s smoky Revlon makeup, but you could easily apply the words to her standout Bulgari jewelry. “They are the bold statement pieces that were popular during the 1970s,” says Jean Ghika, Bonhams’ director of jewelry in the United Kingdom and Europe, referring to the square earrings and layers of chain bracelets. “They were often large in scale and of geometric, abstract design with unusual color combinations.” For Bulgari, there was no one better to stand behind their bold ’70s statements than Hutton. “She was always so dignified in her own look,” says vice chairman Nicola Bulgari. “She was a goddess in her time, and she never changed.”
