A New Mexico janitor may getto keep the 9-ct. diamond he fished out of a vacuum cleaner. Bruce Buck found the gem while vacuuming a local office in February. He first thought it was a fake but later realized it could scratch glass. He eventually turned it over to the local police, and when no owner was found, city officials told him it would be auctioned and the proceeds given to the city treasury.
The officials, however, soon changed their minds and decided to use the episode to make a statement about honesty. So if no one claims the stone, which has an estimated value of $19,000, Buck will sell it and use the money to start a carpet-cleaning business.
