Vic’s Estate and Fine Jewelry, Galveston, Texas, is celebrating its 80th anniversary. That’s a significant event, given its encounter with Hurricane Ike last year. Sharon Pagan, granddaughter of the store’s founders, came back after the storm to “seven feet of water in the store. The first floor was hit hardest, with two safes lost and all of the gemological equipment destroyed.” Without electricity from mid-September to mid-November, Pagan had to pump out the water and clean up the mud that caked the store’s interior. The store reopened after Thanksgiving Day last year, with two borrowed showcases and whatever jewelry she could put in them. The store was then thoroughly redesigned, with its upstairs storage space converted into a rentable office for extra income.
