George Rossman, Ph.D., a professor of mineralogy at the California Institute of Technology and a member of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) board of governors, has been awarded the inaugural Dana Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America. The society established the award to recognize individuals who have made—and continue to make—outstanding contributions through original research in the mineralogical sciences. Rossman has published approximately 190 papers in the fields of mineralogy and chemistry. His research interests include spectroscopic studies of color in natural and irradiated minerals and gems.
