Wholesale dealers report that buying is tight. The mood in the industry is very cautious. Recent failures of major investment firms and bailouts of others are signaling serious problems in capital markets. Eventually the bill will be passed to taxpayers, further cutting into household budgets.
Completion of a summer research project is providing a meaningful look into current market trends for colored stones. For many gem products, prices in the commercial and good qualities have declined. These price changes were fairly minor when viewed as a percentage, but they appear to signal a slowdown in what had been an active area of the market. The discount level of the market also is feeling the pinch. However, extra-fine-quality gems in important sizes remain in demand as the wealthy have fared well through the current economic slowdown. One reality of the market that never seems to change is that top-quality gems attract buyers willing to pay firm prices. The fact that most top-quality gems have low availability at the source doesn’t hurt. In the finer and top extra-fine range, prices have been strong even though the U.S. dollar is making a slow and steady comeback against most currencies.
Indicators suggest the holiday season will be slow. But business often is conducted in slow markets. Retail jewelers should focus on quality and service during the coming months.
