“I wanted the person looking at these to never be able to take their eyes off of them,” says designer Payal Shah, owner of jewelry firm (and LUXURY exhibitor) L’Dezen by Payal Shah. Mission accomplished. The pastel-hued ear candy captures the eye with a host of unique attributes, including an impossibly flowing silhouette and a surface mass not typically seen in earring design. The Floridata earrings were created for the 2015 HKTDC International Jewellery Design Excellence competition, where they won a merit award. But they won’t be traveling anywhere else. “I won’t sell these,” Shah says. “Hopefully, they will become a part of my legacy.”
Slice of Life
These 18k white gold floral danglers were created with 19.86 cts. t.w. sliced fancy diamonds (in blue-green, yellow, and brown tones) and 4.93 cts. t.w. white diamonds. The brand is known for pieces with sliced gemstones; Shah says the earrings “are very much my design style.”
Balancing Act
The biggest challenge in fabricating the intricate pieces was “making sure they were borderline daring and borderline wearable,” Shah says. “I wanted to make sure they weren’t too big on certain parts of the ear, or else they could have looked a bit awkward.”
All Ears
The design is as much a cuff as it is a traditional earring; the top flowers come over and around the upper ear, hook-style. The over-ear rigging “gives them a full and secure look,” Shah says. “But they’re extremely light—almost featherweight—so they don’t hang your ear down at all!”
Glam Slam
“These are a showcase piece for a showcase woman,” says the designer. “I loved the idea of wearing such gorgeous earrings without having any stress involved in wearing them—to be able to rock something so big and glamorous while enjoying their elegance.”
