European Gemological Laboratory in New York recently added a new Nicolet advanced infrared spectrometer to its gem identification department. Infrared testing is important in the identification of many gemstones, including natural and treated colored diamonds and high pressure/high temperature color-enhanced diamonds produced by NovaDiamond and General Electric. An infrared graph will appear on certain EGL gem identification reports. EGL clients can also order infrared testing as a separate service.
EGL also has acquired a latest-generation laser inscription machine. The new machine uses a special “cold laser” process, which is safe to use on diamonds, all colored stones, and metal. The machine not only inscribes a certificate number but also inscribes special messages and reproduces company logos. For more information, call EGL at (212) 730-7380.
