SMASH & GRAB SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER CHASE
A suspect in a November 1994 smash-and-grab robbery of a jewelry store was arrested Jan. 24 in Philadelphia, Pa. The arrest followed a high-speed automobile chase and multiple collision in which the suspect and another motorist were injured.
Police identified the suspect as Andrew Oliver. The suspect had been sought on a federal charge of interstate transportation of stolen property related to a smash-and-grab robbery at the Zales Jewelers Outlet in Philadelphia Sept. 6, 1994. In that incident, said police, three men, one with a hammer, made off with a tray of rings valued at $100,000.
The early morning chase began when Oliver noticed that another car was following him (the car contained FBI agents). A few blocks later, said investigators, Oliver’s car entered an intersection and collided with another automobile, continued on and then collided with a pickup truck.
Police said the other car was driven by Mary Montgomery, 64, who suffered head and rib injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition at press time. The truck was driven by two unidentified men who the police said were not hurt. Oliver was treated for facial cuts and arrested at the scene.
