Designer Cindy Chao and actress Sarah Jessica Parker collaborated on this Ballerina Butterfly brooch for two years—producing a piece that celebrates not only Parker’s love of dance but also their friendship. “I wanted to create something that was as meaningful to her as to me,” says Chao of Parker, who studied ballet as a child and now sits on the board of the New York City Ballet (NYCB). “The butterfly symbolizes the strength and graceful movement exhibited in a ballerina as well as my metamorphosis as a jewelry artist,” Chao says. Both women decided the diamond and pearl ballerina—which sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong for $1.2 million—should benefit the NYCB. “I believe the artistry of ballet and art jewelry is worth preserving,” Chao says, “and should be passed down to generations to come.”
