The 76th Venice International Film Festival, which kicked off Aug. 28 in Italy, promotes artier big-budget Hollywood films—while its daily red carpets function as international runways for opulent fashion and jewelry.
Celebrities and their style squads aim for full-tilt glamour at the Venice fest: Gowns are more elaborate than those we see at Hollywood premieres; makeup and hair is substantial (but often chasing that not-trying-too-hard French ideal); and the event’s jewelry parade doubles as a showcase for the boldest and most artistic new haute designs—pulled almost exclusively from European houses including Chopard, Bulgari, and Messika.
The festival is almost at its midpoint, and the big-gem jewels continue to impress. Here are five looks we’re especially crazy for:
