Varsha Diamonds CEO Predicts Colored Gemstones Will Soar in 2025

Nick Mehta is going ahead and saying it: Colored gemstones will dominate in 2025. “Bringing in color really moves us forward and allows us to do a multitude of things that goes beyond just diamonds,” the CEO of Varsha Diamonds says.

Mehta points to research showing that the global market for colored gemstones has been growing since 2021 and should rise 6.2% by 2028, along with reports that diamond dealers are now buying more colored gems.

“It’s all about evolution,” Mehta says of his company’s embrace of color in 2024. “It’s all about finding ourselves within the industry and analyzing what we do over the years. We started as a small supplier on melee, then moved into retail with larger stones, then we branded with diamonds. We moved into jewelry because we didn’t want to leave any stone unturned. Now the next phase is color.”

Mehta says he has devoted much of this year to traveling and establishing new relationships so Varsha Diamonds can continue to expand its focus on colored gemstones. In May, the brand introduced three collections that center on colored stones.

Color Candy, aimed at the younger buyer, uses semiprecious gemstones such as citrine, garnet, amethyst, and blue topaz. Its approximately two dozen styles, available in 14k gold or gold–plated sterling silver, start at $550.

Green Majesty is Varsha’s capsule collection featuring Zambian emeralds in a variety of cuts, including oval, cushion, and cabochon. The necklaces and rings are made with 18k white gold, and many have natural diamonds as accents. Prices begin at $2,500 with diamonds, $1,500 without.

Varsha’s Rosé, Azur & Amarillo line comprises rings with lab-grown diamonds of 3 cts. and up in hues of pink, blue, and yellow. Pricing starts around $2,900. (This collection is mainly available at trade shows, Mehta says.)

Mehta says the retailers Varsha works with want colored gems in their cases to set them apart from their competition. Diamonds will always have their place in jewelry stores, he says, but so will colored stones—for fine jewelry, men’s jewelry, even engagement rings.

“Colored gemstones are about status just as much as diamonds because of their rarity. There’s a reason why kings and queens wore colored gemstones so much,” says Mehta.

“Diamonds are often seen as a romantic gift, but colored gemstones are something you can buy for yourself for any reason and at any time,” he says.

With its colored gemstone collections, Varsha wanted to offer something for everyone, Mehta says—whether you’re a Gen Z-er building a business wardrobe and you pick Color Candy to amp up your look, or you’re a longtime collector and choose Green Majesty for status.

“It’s about individuality,” he says. “Colored gemstones show your growth from where you were, where you’re going, and where you want to be.”
