The Americans, the TV drama that chronicles the shady dealings of two Russian spies embedded in 1980s suburban America, is currently in its fifth season on the FX network.

And not only is it one of the best series on TV—it’s also one of the most masterfully styled  shows going, in large part due to the fantastic ’80s jewelry costume designer Katie Irish uses.

Lead actors Keri Russell and Holly Taylor—who play mother and daughter (clad in double-breasted coats and blouse-y ’80s boucle sweaters)—are almost always accessorized in gold or silver hoops or oversized post-back earrings. As are the show’s many supporting female actors.

Irish told Entertainment Weekly that she and her team seek out dead stock (un-used vintage) fashion and accessories as much as possible, to lend the show an authentic ’80s look. Nailing that looks requires a lot of effort: “I have two shoppers who work full time, 10 hours a day, five days a week, who go and scour the city and online for all of the stuff that we need,” she told the outlet.

The hoops and post-back earrings Irish uses for the show—which were ubiquitous in the early-to-mid-’80s—are coincidentally roaring back into style today.

Instagram influencers, fashion professionals, and stylish PYTs at Coachella have all cottoned to hoops and post-backs as fresh-feeling alternatives to the boho-feeling dangly earrings we’ve all worn and loved in recent years.

Could it be time to make your store’s earring selection a little more, well, American.
