Every time I’m tempted to think that pearls are a little dull, a little too precious, or maybe just not for me, I think of this photo (right) of maverick fashion designer Coco Chanel lassoed in ropes of pearls—posed as though she’s on a quick smoke break before returning to the business of world domination.
Pearls, when designed with wit and worn with panache, can look and feel incredibly dynamic.
Jewelry brands, including Delfina Delettrez, Doryn Wallach, Paige Novick, and Nektar De Stagni, have been incorporating the luminous sea gems into bold, say-something designs that might have, just a few years back, been filled with trendy opal or tanzanite.
Here are a few of my favorite gutsy pearl looks on the market.
Doryn Wallach 18k gold and pearl gladiator ring, $2,320
Mizuki 14k gold and pearl earrings, $1,990
Nektar De Stagni cultured freshwater double pearl earrings with 14k gold spikes and jacket, $735
Paige Novick pearl and rose-cut stone stud, $450
Delfine Delettrez virus earring, price upon request
EF Collection diamond white topaz and pearl ear jackets, $850
Anissa Kermiche “Corne de gazelle blanc sur noir” choker, approximately $1,920
Nektar De Stagni black gold shark teeth and peacock pearl bracelet, $299
Jewelmer Luminescence South Sea gold pearl and diamond necklace and earrings, price upon request
