Love is in the air. And in the world of fine jewels, that means we’re reminded of particularly romantic designs, such as the toi et moi ring. French for “you and me,” a toi et moi features two stones side by side.
The style first garnered attention in 1796 when Napoleon Bonaparte gave one to his future wife, Josephine de Beauharnais, that showcased a pear-shape diamond and sapphire nestled together. Jacqueline Kennedy famously redesigned her own Van Cleef & Arpels emerald-and-diamond toi et moi ring in 1961.
A symbol of partnership and unity, the toi et moi ring is, naturally, often used for engagements. It’s recently risen in popularity for engagements among celebrities, including Ariana Grande, Emily Ratajkowski, and Megan Fox (who enlisted Stephen Webster to incorporate both her and fiancé Machine Gun Kelly’s birthstones).
So in the spirit of Feb. 14, we’re celebrating with five beautiful and distinct interpretations of the lovely toi et moi style—from inimitable vintage Chaumet and Van Cleef & Arpels to modern yet still classic iterations from jewelers like Berlinger and Katkim.
