TikTok has been trying to position itself as the destination for social commerce, and it does have some bragging rights in its repertoire—heard of #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt?
To help small and medium-size businesses (SMB) expand their holiday sales through the platform, TikTok recently released a playbook that features tips for maximizing visibility and opportunity for Black Friday and Cyber Monday and then throughout the shopping season for Christmas, Hanukkah, Noche Buena, and Kwanzaa.
TikTok offers these few important yet easy tips to remember for content creators: State your winning hook (highlight a holiday promo, call out your target audience, etc.) in the first five seconds of a video, then use the middle 10–20 seconds to make your case about why your product is better than others. The video’s closing three to five seconds should have a clear call to action—what will motivate users to check out your product in the end?
According to TikTok, more than a quarter of users (28%) start shopping for gifts a month before Christmas. But the next highest percentage of users, 22%, begin shopping two to three months prior. To put it simply, if you’re thinking it’s too early to start using holiday-themed hashtags, it most certainly is not (and you could have been doing so even before Halloween).
The products most gifted for the holidays by TikTok users are clothing and accessories (59%), beauty, fragrance, and skincare (54%), and toys and games (49%), the app said. This bodes well for jewelry businesses, as does TikTok’s note that 87% of users buy gifts for themselves during holiday shopping events—who doesn’t love a jewelry self-purchase?
Hashtags to take advantage of during this busy time include #Unboxing (TikTok says unboxing videos are especially popular during Black Friday and Cyber Monday), #BlackFridayHacks (TikTokers are said to like sharing shopping tips with their communities), #BlackFridayDeals, and #TravelInspiration.
To download the guide, users need to answer simple questions from TikTok about their marketing campaign budgets, plans to advertise on the platform, and contact information.
