Earlier this week, On Your Market shared a roundup of peridot rings, a gorgeous group of jewels giving August’s birthstone a deserved spotlight in fine jewelry.
Missing from that roundup—but fitting the description quite beautifully—was a ring found at Finematter, a London-based digital jewelry platform founded in November 2020, comprising indie jewelers from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States.
With a happy oval peridot at its center, substantial in size, the ring is surrounded by the frilly petals of a carved crystal flower. To say it’s a statement is, well, an understatement, because it appears to radiate positive energy with all its might.
The ring is called the Hura, from Amsterdam-based Sophie Joanne Jewelry. Its crystal flower (it’s also available in amethyst, pictured above) has been expertly carved using an age-old wood carving technique, and it’s set in 14k recycled gold.
“So much time and consideration went into this design,” it says on the brand’s Facebook page of the Hura ring. “Inspired by Karl Blossfeldt, who specialized in macrophotography of plants, flowers, and seed heads, resulting in strikingly modern and beautiful images, Sophie closely studies the rhythmic forms of the remarkable seed pods hanging on the Hura Crepitans plant.”
For lovers of floral jewelry but also those with a vast appreciation for beauty, if this be one’s introduction to Sophie Joanne, consider it the start of a new love—because there’s plenty more where this one comes from.
The self-taught designer has kind of a thing about flower jewelry, and that thing is an irresistible offering of it. Bloemenkunst is the name of the collection, “an ode to flowers and their symbolism in modern art,” says the designer’s website.
Throughout Bloemenkunst you’ll find inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe, Hilma af Klint, Andy Warhol, and Karl Blossfeldt, taking note of the artists’ use of color and shape throughout the designs.
Sophie Joanne offers her flowers in a gorgeous variety of gemstones—carved onyx, opal, and turquoise, amethyst, lapis, and more—but it’s the peridot pieces that feel perfect for August.
