Meta Working on Unedited Photo Feature

Meta is reportedly developing a feature for Instagram called Peek that would post a photo in the moment it is taken that can be viewed only once by a user. This concept is very similar to the offerings of BeReal and Snapchat, which promote “authenticity” in posting through unedited content.

Photos posted with Peek would have to be taken for that purpose and not uploaded from the camera gallery. No editing of the picture or adding a filter is allowed, and a photo could be viewed for only 24 hours (same as Instagram Stories).

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is an internal prototype and isn’t being tested externally. No word yet on whether Instagram will roll out the feature to the public.

Longer Reels Can Hurt Your Performance, Instagram Says

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said during an event with creators in New York this past week that Reels lasting longer than 90 seconds can actually hurt distribution, as can—as expected—low-quality videos, non-original content, and videos with third-party watermarks.

Based on the comments replying to the above-linked Thread, a lot of users are frustrated by conflicting advice. Instagram currently allows posting in Reels of videos with a maximum length of 90 seconds, but longer clips can be uploaded.

60-Minute Videos Possibly Coming to TikTok

As opposed to Instagram Reels’ preference for shorter videos (see previous item), TikTok is reportedly testing 60-minute video uploads for some users. If viewers won’t watch a 90-second Reel, will they watch an hourlong TikTok?

While TikTok has in the past increased its video time limit, the hour mark puts it in line to keep up with YouTube, which is one of the app’s biggest competitors. Some television networks have premiered shows on YouTube, so this change might pave the way for them to do so on TikTok.

This feature is not yet available for all users.
