Unconventional diamond shapes were big at Las Vegas Jewelry Week this spring—elongated emerald, oval, and marquise cuts were featured in the center of many an engagement ring—but there was one type of side stone that caught my eye.
“Oh, the caddy cut!” the experts at Rahaminov said when I inquired about a diamond shape I found to be turning up a lot during my travels from booth to booth. The Cadillac cut is not at all new to anyone on the Rahaminov team, and it wasn’t completely unfamiliar to me, either—but its dominant presence in Vegas was somewhat of a revelation, and one I glommed on to heartily.
This diamond cut got its name from its similarity to the Cadillac logo: a five-sided shield shape. It’s also called the epaulette. You most often see stones this shape as side stones, balancing out the symmetry of a ring. What’s so interesting about them is how noticeable they are. Side stones in any ring are important, but they don’t tend to steal the show quite as much as caddy cuts do, as exemplified by the pieces below (and above).
