Last week Scott Kay and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) announced the winner of its annual Scott Kay/FIT Jewelry Design Contest: second-year FIT jewelry design student, JungSoo Lee.
The contest asked entrants to create a set of men’s fashion jewelry that included three pieces from a set of four—ring, bracelet, pendant, and cufflinks.
Scott Kay, the late founder of the Scott Kay brand, was known for imbuing personal meaning into each of his designs. Hence, students were asked to submit a design inspired by something that’s personally meaningful to them.
Contestants created and submitted detailed mood boards, hand drawings, technical drawings, and detailed notes on measurements, materials, and color options for pieces.
Lee’s designs were chosen—after two rounds of judging— based on overall design, originality, creativity, and how well she was able to convey her inspiration through the design details.

The judging panel included Nina Bruno, buyer of men’s jewelry at Macy’s; Victoria Gomelsky, editor-in-chief of JCK; and Robert Quick, associate editor of Essential Homme Magazine. Representing Frederick Goldman on the panel were Jonathan Goldman, CEO, and Mike Giannattasio, senior vice president of sales.
Scott Kay hosted an intimate dinner Feb. 8 with the five contest finalists, along with the judging panel and key members of Scott Kay and FIT. The evening allowed each finalist to present final designs to the panel. Lee was presented with a $3,000 award at the event. (Scott Kay also rewarded the second, third, fourth, and fifth place runners-up with smaller monetary prizes.)
“Partnering with FIT on this design contest continues to be such a rewarding experience,” said Kolleen Meeker, director of brand management at Scott Kay, in a company statement. “We were extremely impressed with the level of creativity that each student put forth with their original designs.”
