Tiffany has a history of enlisting legendary designers. Among the roster (which includes Elsa Perretti and Paloma Picasso) is French designer Jean Schlumberger, who was known for his refined and fantastical approach to jewelry design, famously describing his work as “capturing the irregularity of the universe.” Schlumberger, who passed in 1987, developed a devoted client list of stars, including Wallis Simpson, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and plenty of others throughout his lifetime. And now Christie’s auction house is offering 18 of his collectible creations in its Jewels Online sale.
Simultaneously statement-making and elegant, Schlumberger’s Flame earrings are perhaps some of his most intricate designs. The shape of the flame falls flush with the form of the ear for a totally effortless (yet extravagant) effect.
Schlumberger’s enamel paillonné Cones and V’s bangle, with its gold detailing, is a more interesting take on a rope bracelet, and a signature style from the designer. The sale also includes a black enamel interpretation, called Croisillon, with an estimate between $10,000 and $15,000.
A favorite design of Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy, the Bird on a Rock brooch is undoubtedly one of Schlumberger’s most iconic designs for Tiffany & Co. And luckily for us, Christie’s sale offers two of them: one with a 60 to 63 ct. cushion-cut amethyst (pictured), and another with a 65 to 70 ct. cushion-cut citrine.
Christie’s Jewels Online sale is on through September 30.
