Jewelry is often described with words such as dramatic, beautiful, and flawless. But jewelry rental company Rocksbox is embracing an unlikely term for its Redefined jewelry that’s made in accordance with a sustainability pledge: imperfect.
Rocksbox president Allison Vigil says imperfect is a perfect way to describe Redefined jewelry, with its hand-finished look, nod to organic shapes, and use of reclaimed materials. The 15-piece collection debuted in April, with retail prices ranging from $60 to $95.
The initial Redefined collection was made by in-house designers, who were asked to create jewelry with Scandinavian simplicity that draws inspiration from the natural world, says Vigil.
“Rocksbox Redefined is an exceptionally exciting launch for Rocksbox, as it blends new designs with 14k gold plating over reclaimed brass, bringing to life our commitment to the circular economy,” Vigil tells JCK in an email interview. “These designs balance a bold and classic look that can be great paired with a wedding guest dress as well as with jeans and a T-shirt.”
The Redefined pieces have a rough-hewn feeling to them: The Aspen hoops, for example, are hammered and polished (like most Redefined jewelry) and seem to float in a J-shape; the Aspen ring is chunkier and has an illusion of being two rings in one, its perceived weight giving it character.
Vigil says Rocksbox clients want to buy from companies that are environmentally responsible, which has been a focus of Rocksbox‘s mission since its inception.
“Rocksbox is a customer-inspired company, and our mission is to bring the joy of jewelry to everyone. We know that our customers are becoming more conscientious about their shopping choices and want to support brands whose values align with their own,” Vigil says. “With the launch of Rocksbox Redefined, we’re continuing to build on our brand’s leadership in the circular fashion space.
“Rocksbox members are looking for ways to maintain their style while balancing changing tastes. With rental, they can experience and try different trends and styles, and only purchase what they truly love. For those styles that don’t get a permanent spot in their closet, they can be shared with other jewelry lovers,” Vigil says.
She says she expects jewelry rental to continue growing in the near term, as it is easy to do and allows customers to experiment with bolder looks, new stones, or recycled materials.
“Rental really aligns with the choices consumers want to have as they shop for fashion today. Renting jewelry allows customers to discover new styles and experience changing trends in a way that is convenient and fun,” Vigil says. “Our members can switch up their look anytime and try styles before committing to purchase, so they can be sure that their permanent closet is full of styles they truly love.
“Rental also provides access to jewelry designers and styles that may not have been on customers’ radar or in their budget originally,” Vigil adds.
Rocksbox also offers demi-fine and costume jewelry from designers including Kendra Scott, Kate Spade, and Sophie Harper. Founded in 2012, the company was acquired by Signet Jewelers in 2021.
