Rio Tinto has unearthed a 158.2 ct. yellow diamond at its Diavik mine, one of the largest yellow diamonds ever found in Canada.
The stone is one of only five yellow diamonds weighing more than 100 carats unearthed at Diavik in its 22-year history. The Northwest Territories mine mostly produces white gem-quality diamonds. Less than 1% of its production is yellow.
“This 2 billion–year–old natural Canadian diamond is a miracle of nature and testament to the skill and fortitude of all the men and women who work in Diavik’s challenging sub-Arctic environment,” said Diavik Diamond Mine chief operating officer Matt Breen said in a statement.
Diavik, which has been powered by a solar plant in recent years, is due to close in 2026.
