The robbers who conducted the spectacular $50 million Brussels airport heist in February may not have known what to do with their incredible haul of diamonds, according to a report in a Belgian newspaper.
“They sat there with $37 million in diamonds, and did not know what to do with them,” the newspaper quoted an investigator as saying, noting that the robbers may have expected to get cash. “Their search for buyers for such a large parcel of diamonds caused quite a stir.”
Meanwhile, The New York Times reports that authorities are focused on three suspects in the robbery, including a Swiss lawyer, a businessman in real estate, and a French luxury car exporter. All have maintained their innocence.
This week, authorities arrested at least 27 people in conjunction with the theft.
