Forget peachy, at least for now. The color on everyone’s mind this winter is far less neutral and much more fierce—red.
The past weekend was a treat for celebrity watchers, bringing us the 2024 Critics Choice Awards and the 2023 Emmys (postponed from September, due to the writers’ strike). Both events brought us memorable fashion—and jewels—but the element that stood out the most, at least to me, was the one color everybody seemed to get the memo about.
At the Critics Choice, we saw Dua Lipa in Prada (with hair to match), Emily Blunt in Armani, Margot Robbie in Balmain, and Mandy Moore in Elie Saab. At the Emmys, it was Sarah Snook in Vivienne Westwood, Suki Waterhouse in Valentino, Meghann Fahy in Armani Privé, and Janelle James in Rodarte, just to name a few.
Even the men showed up in red: Charles Melton wore a Valentino suit to the Critics Choice Awards, and Tom Colicchio donned a bright red jacket for the Emmys. So if you’ve suddenly taken an interest in red, now you know why.
What struck me just as much as the surprising (to me) color of choice at the awards shows was how much monochrome dressing there was. Critics Choice attendees including Bella Ramsey, Ali Wong, and Matt Bomer all matched their shoes to their clothing. Selena Gomez did the same at the Emmys, also matching her lips to her gorgeous oxblood ensemble.
Red. Monochrome dressing. Ya follow? If red is the color of the moment, and sporting all one color is the style du jour, then of course one needs red jewels.
Whether or not this spirited color makes the leap from red carpet to everyday reality (anyone else now in the market for a red sweater?), it’s still the right time of year for taking stock of red pieces in your store’s supply—Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and the hue is always expected in its honor.
Below, some of the latest jewels in riveting red.
