There were many exciting jewelry debuts at VincenzaOro 2018, including the latest from the New York–based line Phillip Gavriel. As an extension of its best-selling Popcorn collection, the jeweler’s spring 2018 release will include 15 pieces done in 14k yellow gold. (Popcorn was previously only available in sterling silver with 18k gold accents.)
Designer Phillip Gabriel Maroof decided to add a bit of “gold dust” to Popcorn for sentimental reasons, specifically as a way to mark the 40th anniversary of Royal Chain, a leading supplier of gold chains and finished jewelry that was founded by Maroof’s father and grandfather. The decision to offer key pieces in 14k gold also points to feedback from the brand’s retailers, who have reported a renewed interest in gold, as well as a trend toward higher-ticket sales among consumers.
Ranging from stackable bangles and classic link bracelets to lever-back, semi-hoop earrings, the silhouettes have a vintage feel, with nods to the 1980s and 1990s; many of the pieces are accented with diamonds. Made in Italy, the collection also displays traditional Italian gold techniques, which Maroof acquired during his studies in that country’s jewelry-producing capitals.
In 2008, Phillip Gavriel was launched as Royal Chain’s answer to a demand for trendy, everyday wearable pieces (i.e., fashionable fine jewelry at key price points). At the time, only a dozen or so styles comprised the line; today the 2018 catalog features more than 1,000.
