I took a trip to the beach with my family over Labor Day weekend, in what felt like a vintage all-American farewell to summer. The quaint neighborhoods and Victorian buildings were decorated in their Stars and Stripes, and revelers gathered to partake in classic boardwalk games and fare.
I was reminded of Amity, the setting of my favorite film, Jaws, so I allowed myself to indulge in the charm of an East Coast seaside town.
One such indulgence was going to a local bike shop—at the beach you need nothing more than a bicycle to transport you—where I was instantly amazed at the assortment of colors available to those in the market for a bicycle. One particular hue caught my eye: not quite peach, not quite orange or pink, but somewhere in between. A color simultaneously soothing and invigorating, it felt like nothing I’d ever seen before.
Enthralled by the color, I have been on a quest to find and procure things in that same what-the-heck-is-it? shade that’s similar but not identical to either Creamsicle or salmon.
Padparadscha sapphire comes darn close—and it’s just as enlivening.
We are now in the midst of sapphire month, and though it’s hard to beat this month’s birthstone in its classic, beloved shade of blue, I love that it exists in such a variety because it means the gem has the ability to surprise us.
Padparadscha sapphire probably is a surprise for most consumers, in the same way that perfect-to-me color of the bike was. It’s got that whole, “Oh! What’s that?” thing going for it, in its eye-catching, curiosity-provoking way.
Not all occurrences of padparadscha sapphire are the same color: Some variations are more on the pink side—I personally feel most drawn to the orangey stones—and some swim with a bit of both pink and orange, a mystical sight.
No matter your preference, there’s a padparadscha for every gemstone lover and collector. Here are a few of the latest padparadscha jewels.
