The American flag is reinterpreted in a new watch from Biel/Bienne, Switzerland–based Perrelet, which is debuting the model just in time for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London (starting Friday, July 27).

The Limited-Edition Turbine XL America Watch offers a “deconstructed perspective of the American flag” according to makers, featuring a supersized 50 mm (thus the XL) case, a 12-blade, oblique-cut rotating wheel over a red-and-white-painted dial, blue square accents peppered with tiny white stars, red and white markers, and a rugged black rubber strap that definitely looks like it could withstand an Ironman or two. (And if that were the case, Perrelet is prepared: the watch is water-resistant to 5 ATM.)

The overall aesthetic calls to mind images of exaggerated comic book figures à la Marvel Comics’ The Avengers, and a mini film made to promote the piece attempts to drive message home: a Marilyn-esque cartoon pin-up girl twirls a striped umbrella in a lo-fi Instagram-looking filtered beach shot, while a jacked-up, possibly steroid rage-induced Uncle Sam in tattered attire (methinks he had a Hulk moment) shows up at the finale as the muscle ready to wear the watch. Mixed in with the whimsy, we catch glimpses of the sapphire-crystal protected (front and back) Automatic P-181, open-worked, black Double Rotor movement, which is unique to Perrelet. Each watch retails for $7,150, and the collection is limited to 777 pieces, a nod to the year Perrelet was founded: 1777—just one year after our own country was born.
