A token of a highly publicized and longstanding Hollywood friendship will soon find a new home. On Jan. 30, the diamond bracelet that Michael Jackson gave to Elizabeth Taylor will be on the block in U.K.-based auction house Woolley & Wallis’ fine jewelry sale.
The line bracelet—featuring 27 graduated radiant-cut yellow diamonds, the largest of which weighs 3.38 cts.—is expected to achieve approximately $61,000 to $86,000 (£50,000 to £70,000). Christie’s originally sold the piece for a respectable $182,500 in 2011.
“We are extremely fortunate to be offering for sale in Salisbury this beautiful and highly wearable diamond bracelet with truly legendary provenance that continues to live on,” said Marielle Whiting, jewelry specialist at Woolley & Wallis.
To the public, Jackson and Taylor’s relationship was a source of fascination and scrutiny, but to the two superstars, it was a sanctuary of mutual understanding in a world that often felt alienating. They were such close friends, Jackson made Taylor godmother to his daughter, Paris.
Known for his extravagant gifts, Jackson often showered Taylor with jewels—including a diamond, emerald, and ruby Massoni monkey necklace currently on view at M.S. Rau in New Orleans.
Announcing the bracelet sale, Woolley & Wallis noted that Taylor once said, “I feel as though I’m only the custodian of my jewelry. When I die and they go off to auction, I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home.”
