When Mary Esses debuted her Una collection earlier this year, she told JCK that her goal was to “use colored stones in a new, neat, simple, and modern way—something fun and elegant but also for everyday.”
She accomplished that goal straightaway in her initial 10 styles with marquise and baguette cuts and now adds to them with a few more cool new looks—stud earrings and modern jackets.
Sold as pairs, wearers can opt for studs alone or for the complete unit. But instead of minimalism, her looks this time are inspired by the illustrations of animals and sea creatures by German physician and naturalist Ernst Haeckel, who named myriad new species.
“He studied many forms from nature and made the most amazing illustrations,” she explains. “He categorized thousands of them, though some he invented and they never existed in the way he drew them. Still, he was extremely talented. I found one of his books and have been crazy about it ever since.”
