The butterflies currently fluttering around at Sutra Jewels may look familiar—the Houston-based jeweler originally released them at last year’s Baselword. For this year’s show, the line’s designer, Arpita Navlakha, scaled back the proportions of the jewelry and refined the palettes to be more wearable and daytime-appropriate (the originals were bolder and more black-tie, better suited for evening or the red carpet).
Both collections were inspired by the designer’s childhood memories of the botanical gardens of Mumbai, where beautiful butterflies of every imaginable color would float among the flowers and plantings. Navlakha sketched the butterflies from memory and also played with stone layouts to arrive at the final silhouettes and combinations. Rose-cut diamonds were added to many of the pieces to add dimension and detail (without overwhelming them with a profusion of blindingly bright, white diamonds).
But do Navlakha’s revisions to the line make the butterflies any less spectacular? Not exactly. Highlights are below, take a look and see if you agree!
