Lucara Diamond Corp. has announced the winning names for two noteworthy diamonds discovered this year at its Karowe mine in Botswana.
The record-breaking 2,488 ct. diamond recovered in August (pictured at left) has been named Motswedi, which in Botswana’s native language Setswana means “water spring or the flow of underground water that emerges to the surface offering life and vitality,” according to Lucara.
The 1,094 ct. diamond found in September has been named Seriti, which means aura or presence in Setswana.
The two names were chosen through a nationwide contest in Botswana. A panel judged submissions on creativity and originality, Botswana cultural significance, and relevance to the diamonds themselves.
A prize of 100,000 pula (about $7,325) will be awarded to the person who named the 2,488 ct. diamond. The winner for naming the 1,094 ct. stone will receive 50,000 pula (about $3,662). Both people will also receive a tour of the Karowe mine.
Lucara says it is considering sale options for both the Motswedi and Seriti diamonds.
