Jewelry brand Kendra Scott today unveiled its first collection in a multiyear partnership with music legend Dolly Parton, inspired by Parton’s song “Love Is Like a Butterfly.”
The centerpiece of the Dolly Parton x Kendra Scott collaboration is the 1974 Butterfly necklace—named for the year Parton released the song (and the same-named album), which also happens to be the year Scott was born. Kendra Scott created a total of 1,974 of the necklaces.
Company founder Kendra Scott says the limited-edition collection embraces Parton’s larger-than-life style and her brand’s signature gemstones and silhouettes, including the instantly recognizable Elisa. It offers 12 different pieces, ranging in price from $70 for the Ari Heart Music Note pendant necklace to $350 for the 1974 Butterfly necklace, which is available in gold with pink abalone or vintage silver with mother-of-pearl.
Scott, who serves as executive chairwoman and chief creative officer of the Kendra Scott brand, considers Parton a role model as a philanthropist, creative artist, and singular talent.
“Dolly Parton has been a personal hero of mine since childhood,” says Scott. “She embodies what it means to be talented, glamorous, humorous, and kind—always unapologetically herself. Working with Dolly has been a dream come true, and I’m so thrilled to create a collection inspired by some of her best songs.”
In a statement, Parton returned the compliments. “Before I ever met Kendra, I was aware of her reputation as a self-made woman, her kind heart, and, of course, her wonderful jewelry line,” the superstar said. “The more I get to know Kendra, the more I love her. She’s the real deal, beautiful inside and out.”
The Elisa pendant, a Kendra Scott staple, comes on a double-strand necklace in the Parton collaboration, with one of the chains studded with small butterflies. The pendant is available in either light pink or iridescent drusy and features the name Dolly on the back. Other statement-making styles include Crystal earrings in ivory mother-of-pearl ($198) and the Wrap necklace covered in white crystals ($250).
The song and album that inspired this first collection were released in August/September 1974. “Love Is Like a Butterfly” became Parton’s fourth No. 1 single on the U.S. country music chart and was later the opening theme music for Parton’s 1976-1977 TV variety show Dolly. Parton uses a butterfly as the w in the logo of her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., near where she was born.
Parton has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and has received 11 Grammy Awards and the Kennedy Center Honors, among many other accolades. Also known for such movies as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, she has gained even more fans in recent years among younger generations thanks to podcasts like Dolly Parton’s America.
