Kate Middleton Swapped Her Engagement Ring for Something New

Share

On Aug. 11, ahead of the Olympics closing ceremony, the Prince and Princess of Wales were joined by David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, and other stars in congratulating Great Britain’s athletes on their performance in Paris, in a surprise video posted to X (or, as most of us still know it, Twitter) and Instagram.

There had been speculation about the royals making an appearance at the Games, but fans were delighted with this virtual one instead—especially since it held several surprises. For one, William sported facial scruff in lieu of his traditional clean shave.

Another thing viewers took note of: Kate had swapped her iconic 12 ct. sapphire engagement ring for an infinity band adorned with colored stones.

A little detective work revealed that Kate’s band resembles a pearl and garnet promise ring William gave her in college, incorporating both of their birthstones. A number of observers surmised that it’s a new ring William gave Kate for their 13th anniversary, which the couple celebrated in the spring. Other people believe it was a gift to support the princess as she fights cancer.

William and Kate continue to keep a low profile, with no public appearances as a family currently scheduled for the rest of summer. Any sighting, especially with Kate looking so well, is welcome for fans. And for jewelry enthusiasts, her wearing a new jewel is just the icing on the cake.

“From all of us watching at home, congratulations to Team GB,” the Princess of Wales says in the video. “Well done on all you’ve achieved—you’ve been an inspiration to us all,” adds the Prince.
