The organizers of the Jewelry Industry Summit are turning to an unusual way to raise money for their event: crowdfunding site Indiegogo.
“We are trying to do a grassroots crowdfunding initiative in keeping with our goal that this be an industry-wide effort,” says Cecilia Gardner, secretary of the summit planning committee.
The two-and-a-half-day summit will address sustainability and responsible sourcing and is scheduled for March 2016 in New York City, preceding the JA New York show.
The discussions will be conducted with the help of a professional facilitator and are meant to develop a set of voluntary best practices for jewelry businesses.
The event’s fund-raising goal is $30,000. At press time, the committee had raised $4,735.
“I’m very encouraged by raising $4,700,” Gardner says. “But we are not up to $30,000 yet.”
