Trendsetting jewelry collection Me&Ro is closing its only store, located in New York City’s Nolita neighborhood, after 20 years of residency on bustling Elizabeth Street. The store will officially shutter at the end of March.
Owner and founder Robin Renzi will be pivoting to focus on building the brand’s digital presence, but she doesn’t discount the possibility of opening another brick-and-mortar store in the future.
The retailer’s seen a lot of action on the lower Manhattan street over the 35 years she’s lived and worked there. Fellow block residents have included Vincent Gallo, Eric Bogosian, Vinny Vella, and Martin Scorsese, who grew up in the neighborhood.
“I love this block!’ said Renzi in a prepared statement. “In many ways it’s felt like a film set over the years, with kids cooling off with the help of an open fire hydrant on a hot day to the Italian ladies in their lawn chairs gossiping about everyone. The Godfather III and Basquiat were actually filmed on Elizabeth Street!”
She added, “This block has given me so much, and I feel so fortunate to have known the cast of characters on it, past and present. I will, of course, keep returning to visit Albanese Meats & Poultry, run by Moe since the 1950s.”
With Me&Ro, Renzi helped pioneer the “daily gold” and layered necklace looks that are still popular 20 years later. A longtime celebrity and stylist favorite, the collection’s been featured in more than 100 movies, including Black Swan, Eat Pray Love, The Devil Wears Prada, and Notting Hill. Me&Ro has also worked closely with the wardrobe team for Law & Order: SVU for many years.
Moving forward, the company’s website will feature sneak peaks of new pieces and surprise sales and pop-ups. The brand is currently hosting a closing sale (at the Elizabeth Street store only) through March 21 that features 30%-50% off a wide selection of sterling silver and 18k gold jewelry.
