Jeweler’s Blog Asks Claire’s to Pull Look-Alike Designs

In an episode reminiscent of last year’s controversy involving Urban Outfitters, a blogger for an English jeweler has sparked a social media firestorm after posting items from Claire’s Accessories that appear to be quite similar to the jeweler’s own designs.

In a blog post titled “Can You Spot the Difference?,” English designer Tatty Devine, who has two London boutiques, shows side-by-side representations of its Dinosaur Necklace design, as well as its Fishbone, Banana, and Mustache Necklaces, along with lookalike pieces it claims were purchased at Claire’s.

“We’re very much hoping Claire’s will be willing to withdraw these pieces,” the post concluded. The company later tweeted: “We’ve just spoken to our lawyer. We can’t say much more, but we’re taking this very seriously.”

The post sparked fury on Twitter, with the company later tweeting that “Tatty Devine is now trending in Britain.”  It eventually led to stories on British news outlets like the BBC and The Guardian. The company later added: “All this press attention means our site may occasionally be down today.”

Claire’s could not be reached for a comment by JCK. But it wrote on Facebook: “Claire’s Stores, Inc. is a responsible company that employs designers, product developers and buyers, and works with many suppliers to provide innovative collections that bring customers all the latest fashion trends. As such, we take any allegations of wrong doing seriously. We are looking into the matters raised.”
