This week’s agenda covers a jewelry auction to benefit a high-profile nonprofit organization, a WJA webinar on deconstructing gender, a preview of what’s sure to be a blockbuster jewelry sale at Christie’s, and two events taking place on the other side of the Atlantic. (Hooray for the return of international travel!)
BID
Pure Gold Auction: Sept. 27–Oct. 4 (online)
Starting tomorrow, you’ll have the opportunity to bid on 40 pieces of responsibly sourced jewelry in an auction to benefit Pure Earth, a global NGO tackling toxic pollution issues affecting the health of millions of people, primarily children, all over the globe. The auction closes on Monday, Oct. 4, at 9:30 p.m., at the conclusion of the Pure Earth Benefit Bash, which raises money for Pure Earth’s life-saving projects in the field (more details on the event to come in next week’s JCK Jewelry Agenda!).
SHOP
Goldsmiths Fair in London: Sept. 28–Oct. 10 (in person)
The finest jewelry and silversmithing work in the U.K. goes on sale this week at the Goldsmiths’ Fair in London. The event, which takes place at historic Goldsmiths’ Hall, is known as the foremost destination for precious metal, fine jewelry, and contemporary silver by the best independent designer-craftsmen working on that side of the pond. Timed entry tickets (costing £10, or about $13.75) allow visitors in for up to 2.5 hours.
ATTEND
Van Cleef & Arpels Exhibit in Paris: Through Nov. 14 (in person)
Heading to Paris this fall? Don’t miss “Florae,” a special jewelry exhibition at Hôtel d’Évreux on Place Vendôme organized by Van Cleef & Arpels in collaboration with Mika Ninagawa, a prominent Japanese photographer known for her colorful floral compositions in macro detail. “Van Cleef & Arpels gave Ninagawa carte blanche to create an exhibition of her work presented alongside its jewels, which are housed in showcases specially designed to blend into their surroundings,” All That Glitters columnist Amy Elliott wrote in a recent piece for JCK. “The result is a dreamlike stroll through an enchanted, incandescent jardin teeming with electric, supersaturated colors.” Yowza!
Christie’s Magnificent Jewels Sale Preview in New York: Sept. 27–29 (in person)
This week is a now or never opportunity to see (IRL!) a historic pair of diamond bracelets that once belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette. The pieces will headline Christie’s live Magnificent Jewels sale, scheduled for Nov. 9 at the Four Season Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, but they’ll be on view at Christie’s New York showroom through Wednesday. The queen, often criticized for her uncontrolled spending, purchased the bracelets in the spring of 1776 for the princely sum of 250,000 livres. Set with 112 diamonds, they are estimated to fetch between $2 million and $4 million.
WJA NY Metro x Miami Webinar on Deconstructing Gender: Sept. 30, 7 p.m. ET (online)
The conversation around gender (and genderlessness) is shaping up to be one of the most important cultural topics impacting fine jewelry design in the 2020s. This Thursday, the NY Metro and Miami chapters of the Women’s Jewelry Association tackle the subject in an online panel discussion sure to hit the most relevant notes.
