Millions of television viewers around the world
share something in common: They love the television character Dr. Gregory
House (actor Hugh Laurie) on the television show House M.D.
To that end, European watch firm, Kronsegler GmbH in
Glashu?tte, Germany, recently unveiled a line of affordable steel timepieces
with House fans in mind. The House
M.D. range of watches—also on sale in France and Great Britain—features four
men’s and four ladies’ styles with surgical steel cases, leather straps (though
a stainless-steel strap is available for the men’s watches), a pulsometer to
measure the wearer’s pulse and breathing rate, a chronograph movement that is
calibrated for 30 heartbeats, and a central stop hand in the shape of an Aesculapian
staff which also resembles Gregory House’s walking stick from the show.

However, this watch isn’t just for doctors. “It is a watch
for everybody, especially for fans of House,” explains Maik Liesche, the
president and chief executive officer of Kronsegler. Of course, doctors, too,
like the watch because they have an object that can speak to their professional
status without saying a word.

According to Liesche, some 18 months of negotiations were
required to get the license from NBC Universal. The House M.D. watch line
is the first and only official one directly affiliated
with the show (see Hugh Laurie in its ads).
Price for all watches is $189.90, and an additional strap
costs $45. Currently, the watches are for sale only on Amazon.com (as of
December 2010) but the U.S. jewelry industry can meet Liesche in person when he
exhibits, for the first time, at JCK Las Vegas in 2011 at Mandalay Bay.
“We love to make all our watches in connection with a
special subject, like astronomical, historical, or philosophy themes,”
explained Liesche in an e-mail interview.
