Hoop earrings are such a mainstay of style that, like stud earrings, they reside outside of the realm of fashion trends. This season, however, they are appearing in fashion editorials and ads and as celebrity style choices in force, and why not? Hoops reflect a combination of a casual sportswear attitude combined with more than a touch of allure.  

Many hoop earrings are simply designed. Because basic round hoop earrings, much like basic stud earrings, are virtually indistinguishable in terms of source, it’s no surprise that they are favored earrings for photo shoots when large, reliably attractive earrings that don’t draw too much attention away from the clothes are favored.

A current ad for Lauren Ralph Lauren shows large classic hoop earrings with a menswear-inspired pantsuit and coat.

Actress Andie MacDowell wears large hoop earrings in a current ad for L’Oreal Paris skin care.

Actress Rachel Bilson wears classic 18kt gold hoops from Tiffany & Co. and Gemma Redux gold-plated bangles along with her dress from Herve Leger by Max Azria in this photo from the fall InStyle Makeover 2011 issue.

A feature in the August 2011 issue of Vogue pictures model Anais Mali wearing a variety of classic hoop earrings. In the photo above, she wears Cartier hoop earrings, cuff, and ring, plus a pendant necklace from Solange Azagury-Partridge and an opal bracelet from Irene Neuwirth. Her dress is from Jil Sander, coat from Ralph Lauren Collection, sunglasses from Oliver Peoples, bag from Fendi, and shoes from Dries Van Noten.

In the second photo from the August 2011 issue of Vogue, she wears very large 18k gold hoops from Robert Lee Morris along with a link necklace and rainbow ring from Solange Azagury-Partridge. She sports clothing and belt from The Row and carries a bag from Tod’s.

Extremely large hoops accompany signature zigzag knit designs from Missoni for Target in a current ad.

Adding sparkle to the hoops makes them more appropriate for evening, although their inherently sexy/sporty vibe means they won’t be an optimal choice for every evening look and every woman.

Large embellished hoops are featured in this current ad for Cesare Paciotti, which pictures the model in a white evening gown also wearing a pair of embellished bangles.

An ad for John Hardy in the September 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar features intricately embellished large hoops along with various styles of textured bracelets.

Jennifer Lopez wears sparkling diamond or diamante hoops in this current ad for L’Oreal Paris lip gloss.

Given their intriguing allure, it’s easy to understand why hoop earrings merit a spot in many a jewelry wardrobe.
