Jazz Age Jewel: Hancocks Spotlights Pearl Sautoir by Marsh & Co.

Hancocks London has unveiled a rare relic of the Jazz Age as its Jewel of the Month for March—a sautoir-style pearl and diamond necklace crafted circa 1925 by the esteemed San Francisco jeweler Marsh & Co.

The piece features perfectly matched natural pearls strung across four even strands and punctuated by platinum and diamond dividers, creating a balance between weights and textures. For its centerpiece, a 1.1 ct. oval diamond sits within diamond-set platinum openwork that showcases the art deco era’s geometric design aesthetic.

A tassel pendant suspended from the centerpiece is composed of natural pearls cascading from a diamond-studded platinum cap, evoking the movement and dynamism associated with art deco style. Attention to detail is evident from every angle on the necklace—even its ornate tongue-and-box clasp, set with an old mine cushion-cut diamond.

“This sautoir embodies the opulence and geometric precision of art deco design, a testament to Marsh & Co.’s legacy of exceptional craftsmanship,” said Amy Burton, creative director of Hancocks London, in a statement. “It’s a true collector’s piece, one that captures the spirit of a golden age and remains effortlessly timeless.”

Marsh & Co., renowned for its mastery of platinum and diamonds, created jewels that epitomized the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. This sautoir, with its harmonious blend of pearls, diamonds, and platinum, serves as a testament to the company’s artistry.

The piece is currently available at Hancocks’ gallery on St. James’s Street in London for £38,500, or approximately $49,000.
