Hancocks Offers 1830s Necklace Full of Greek Gods in Onyx

Hancocks London has unveiled an 1830s mythology-themed necklace of onyx cameos, available at the jeweler’s St. James’s Street flagship and online for £55,000 (approximately $69,000).

The rare piece, depicting a dozen Olympian gods, showcases the craftsmanship and fascination with Greek mythology that were prevalent in the early 19th century. Wearing the image of a Greek god was believed to bring blessings, and jewelry portraying gods of Ancient Greece demonstrated piety and conveyed social status.

On the necklace from Hancocks, intricately carved cameos alternate with turquoise cabochons. Each cameo and gemstone is framed in embellished 18k yellow gold, for a striking aesthetic.

Zeus is the focal point of Hancocks London’s one-of-a-kind antique gold necklace featuring onyx cameos of Greek gods, spaced by turquoise cabochons.

The largest cameo, Zeus, sits at the center, with Demeter and Hestia on one side and Apollo and Poseidon on the other. Ares, Artemis (whose cameo cleverly conceals the clasp), Athena, Hephaestus, Hermes, Hera, and Aphrodite complete the pantheon.

“This necklace is more than an accessory; it is a tangible narrative of ancient myth, a wearable work of art that invites the wearer to embody the grandeur and mystery of the Greek gods,” said Hancocks London’s creative director, Amy Burton, in a statement. “Its thoughtful craftsmanship and mythological references make it a true collector’s piece. Ancient history captivates imaginations as much now as it has ever done, and this combination makes this a truly one-of-a-kind jewel.”
