Halloween is here! And this year it falls at the most opportune time. Which is nearly as cruel a joke as much of 2020 has been. Here we are, with a fabulously wicked holiday upon us, one, it feels, that hardly ever falls on a weekend, and it’s happening on a Saturday. And not just any Saturday, but one that comes right before daylight savings time, giving us an extra hour to sleep the next morning.
And for what?
It used to be you’d long for Halloween to land on a weekend, as you awkwardly headed to work with a foggy head, either from too much imbibing or lack of sleep (or both), traces of your costume (glitter, it was always glitter) still evident from the evening’s festivities. Granted, those days are behind me anyway, but I’d still sure appreciate a Halloween falling on a Saturday nonetheless.
Delight in Halloween or dread it, 2020 demands—requires!—celebrating responsibly. But I suppose that’s where spooky jewelry like this especially comes in handy.
Jewelry is something so often worn to be admired, to be seen. But it’s also something so precious and meaningful, we can wear it for ourselves and no one else. Sometimes, even the most sensationally beautiful jewelry isn’t worn for the sole purpose to be seen—it means something to us.
So this year, as consumers shop with sentiment in mind, the treasures we dub “Halloween jewelry” could possibly be seen in a new light. Often, they’re a novelty—pieces that are fun to see and wear but aren’t practical purchases for those without an abundance of disposal income to spend on jewelry. This year, though, they’re more symbolic, an ode to one’s favorite holiday. And it’s not just about the holiday. It’s the one time of year when grown-ups get to let their imaginations run wild, to pretend they’re someone else—a hero, a villain, a meme, a pun. It’s also a special time for kids, when parents join in on the make-believe like never before. You eat candy until your ears buzz, and calories definitely don’t count. Halloween is pure magic.
And so, maybe Halloween jewelry really is for more than a day. To wear all the time, keeping that feeling of freedom and fun close, whenever it’s needed. And nothing has taught us to hold on to the good stuff like this year has.
