The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), which promotes India’s diamond and jewelry industry, has elected a new chairman and vice chairman.
Chair Pramod Kumar Agarwal (pictured, right) and vice chair Colin Shah (pictured, below) will serve from 2018 to 2020.
Agrawal has more than 30 years of experience in the gem and jewelry business. He worked as regional chairman of the GJEPC’s Rajasthan region, as well as serving as a member of the group’s administration committee.
Shah is the managing director of Kama Schachter Jewelry, first established in 1996.
Agrawal said a statement he will work on establishing a stable taxation regime for the industry; reduction in tariff rates for cut and polished diamonds; and stimulating the industry though generic diamond and jewelry promotion.
“The industry is at a critical juncture, where it needs to be more organized and transparent in terms of doing business,” he added.
Shah called for a “complete transformation” of the industry, including establishing a better image with banks and the government and modernizing GJEPC’s educational offerings.
