On Sept. 19, Gemological Institute of America opened a campus in Tokyo, Japan, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by President and CEO Susan Jacques and local industry leaders.
Beginning in November, the new Tokyo campus will offer GIA’s Diamond Essentials Intensive and Diamond Grading Lab classes in Japanese. By early 2018, it will make available Japanese-language Diamond Essentials and Diamond Grading eLearning courses. It plans to add colored stones programs at a later date so that the GIA can offer its Graduate Gemologist degree in Japanese.
Japan was the first country outside the United States where GIA offered educational courses, more than 40 years ago. The Institute opened a gem identification and grading laboratory in Tokyo in December 2012.
