Katrin Zimmermann has jewelry to thank for her extended stay in New York City—she came 20 years ago to visit a friend, fell hard for the city vibe, and still hasn’t left. She was at the start of a career as a Chinese art and archeology historian that had her living between London and China, but in order to stay in the city she decided to shift professional gears and enroll in the jewelry program at the Fashion Institute of Technology. As Zimmermann honed her signature style for Ex Ovo Jewelry, it took a minimal turn with inspiration taken from sculpture and styles executed in lean Spartan-looking silver cable designs. More recently, flexible and colorful resin pieces are set with diamond accents, allowing the artist to make “super-pliable material that’s lightweight in construction,” she says. Zimmermann also teaches jewelry-making at the Pratt Institute.
