If you asked me to list five of my most favorite things in the world, soccer would be one of them. In our house, there’s always a game on: We keep up with at least five different leagues at the club level, and when an international tournament is going on, it’s cause for celebration. So the 2018 World Cup is like Christmas—except it’s a holiday that lasts a month.
I’ll get this confession out of the way right now: Though I truly admire the incredible skill and incomparable athleticism of the Beautiful Game, let’s face it—it doesn’t hurt that the athletes are some of the most beautiful people on earth. What other sport has such stunning participants? I argue that there isn’t one, and so, for other reasons (but perhaps not as much as the one I just mentioned), I am a lifelong fan.

While most of the players are quite young (mid-30’s is considered over-the-hill in soccer, unless you’re a goal keeper), it’s not surprising to find many with an interest in fashion (Héctor Bellerín is a style star, recently profiled by Mr. Porter for his notable streetwear). So it’s always interesting to see what the players are donning off the pitch, or, in Neymar’s case, the jewels of choice flashed just before the game (pictured at top).

While everyone’s talking about his hair (seriously, what is that?), I was blinded by the jewels sparkling from the Brazilian forward’s ears. Young and with money to burn, it’s not surprising to see the star with iced ears. But where some would opt for a high-carat pair of diamond studs, Neymar gets creative.

I noticed him wearing a pair—two pairs, actually—of sparkling black diamond earrings on the pitch before the Brazil–Switzerland game (they were removed for game play) and dove right into Instagram to see if I could find more instances of it. Turns out he’s been styling his ears like that for quite some time now, I just never really noticed (and coming from a jewelry person, that is a big boo-boo). He seems to like the double-huggie earring look but goes for the stud-and-huggie combo every once in a while, too.
But it doesn’t matter if you’re one of the biggest soccer names in the world or a regular old football fan like me; it doesn’t matter your sex, or whether you’ve got a trendy albeit controversial haircut; the double-hoop look (and others pictured here) is something special for everyone. So here’s to doing the double thing with earrings, and here are some choices to do it with. Thanks for the inspo, Neymar.
