Emerald
As you might have expected from the 2013 Color of the Year, emerald ruled the red carpet last night. Seen on the ears of starlets like Lea Michele in Lorraine Schwartz, Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery in Art Deco–esque emerald and diamond drops, and Kelly Osbourne in what were probably one of the most expensive jewels of the night from Jacob & Co., green reigned supreme.

Diamond Necklaces
The fashion star of the night, if you ask me, was Jessica Alba, in a peachy Oscar de la Renta dress complemented by a cascading diamond necklace by Harry Winston that likely required its own security guard. Another notable diamond necklace was worn by cohost Amy Poehler, who added some serious Chopard sparkle to her sassy Stella McCartney menswear-inspired tux.

Linear Drop Earrings
Jennifer Lawrence donned one of my favorite pair of earrings of the night: graduated diamond line drops by Chopard. Claire Danes also walked the line with stick-straight drops set with rubies and diamonds from Lorraine Schwartz.

Statement Earrings
Green wasn’t the only star of the night when it came to earrings. Stars donned statement earrings from Lorraine Schwartz, including Taylor Swift who complemented her beautiful and very grown-up plum gown with tiered gemstone and diamond drops; Megan Fox in coral, ruby, and diamond earrings that added color to her otherwise snooze-worthy Dolce & Gabbana gown; Naomi Watts in lavender jade and ruby drops that accented her awesome oxblood dress; and Emily Blunt, who was sensational in ruby earrings and pink sapphire. Salma Hayek added a dash of color to her black Gucci gown with Martin Katz Paraiba tourmaline cabochon earrings.

Trend-Spotting: Single Earrings and Ear Cuffs
By the looks of my Twitter feed, many disagree, but I loved Sienna Miller’s effort to stand out by sporting diamond sparklers—in one ear only. I liked it because, while many starlets make attempts to stand out with big, loud statements (though there weren’t really any this go-round), Sienna did something small and simple that you may have missed if you didn’t watch the red carpet preview hours before the show started. But the trend that I can’t wait to take part in? The ear cuff. Julianne Hough sported an ear cuff fashioned from a stick insect, adding a punk rock twist to her sweet Monique Lhuillier gown.
