Facebook will let retailers offer group deals, in a
service that will compete with Groupon and similar sites, Bloomberg
reported March 11.
The service, which will be launched through its Deals program,
will debut in five cities: Atlanta, San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, and Austin,
the news service said.
“Local businesses will be able to sign up to use this
feature soon,” the company told Bloomberg.
Facebook is just the latest entrant into the “local deals” arena. Earlier this year, Google announced it was planning a Groupon-like site. And Groupon’s main competitor, LivingSocial, has received a major investment from Amazon.
