While portal has a straightforward definition—a doorway, gate, or other entrance—one can’t help but feel the word conjures up a bit of fantasy or mysticism. A door is a door, but when it’s a portal, it promises some kind of magical encounter.
Evangeline Jewelry seems to echo that sentiment with its newest collection, named Portals. “I had the idea of creating an entire fantasy world, and using jewelry to illustrate it,” Eva Porche, the brand’s founder and designer, tells JCK. “I decided I would start making themed collections around each realm in this world. I realized that, naturally, the first collection in this series had to be portals—the entry point.”
The jewels from the collection represent portals—in both the literal and metaphorical senses—yet each piece has its own story and source of inspiration. “I didn’t want the idea to be ‘portal to my world,’ but rather ‘portal to wherever you please,’ so I knew each piece was going to look a bit different,” Porche says. “I remained hopeful that a singular voice would still be found in each piece, as long as I stayed true to the vision. I spent time researching old paintings, other forms of art, and elements in nature that are widely revered, and incorporated the common elements. Stained-glass windows, spiraling staircases, archways, intricacies, patterns in nature, things overgrown and full of character often inspire awe.”
Those sources are evident, from the Looking Glass Chamber ring with a piece of Italian micromosaic glass ensconced in golden vines, to the Into the Cave ring (pictured at top) and its cavernous entry a person residing within.
A beautiful spiraling detail is used in much of the collection, but the differing pieces offer something for myriad tastes. The yellow gold Portal Eye ring is bold, while the Night and Day band is a more delicate, stackable option (and would serve as an excellent wedding band).
Porche says she began planning the collection in December. “I promised myself I’d take my time with it, but I couldn’t stay away from the bench for more than a day until the collection was done,” she says.
“I love entertaining the idea that anything is possible, and worlds beyond ours are more than fiction. It inspires hope and excitement. I figured many daydreaming types may relate to this. Metaphorically, a portal can represent entering a new chapter of life, a new headspace, a transition. Jewelry often serves as a way to commemorate big moments like these.”
